New Portfolio Company - Sustainable Agriculture in Peru
SocialAlpha-Bastion has invested USD 400,000 in a high-impact sustainable agriculture cooperative in Peru. Initially funded by the UN to promote cacao cultivation as an alternative to growing coca leaves, since the 1990s the co-op has grown to more than 2,000 members and become the largest cacao exporter in Peru, while securing Fair Trade certification in 2004 and winning the national cocoa quality competition in recent years. The co-op has diversified into other products and services like dried coconut, a reforestation and carbon capture program and credit service for members, as well as access to medical services like dental and eye care. The average farm size of its members is 3–10 hectares, and many also grow fruit and timber trees.
